the spare tire syndrome

I am a woman 73 years old, always thin at 5"6" and 128 pounds.  But lately I have what my friends say is just old age...but a huge roll around my waist.  HOW CAN I GET RID OF IT?   I walk about 1 mile every day, but dont domuch exercise.  What is happening??
