The upcoming election has me fascinated, yet frustrated, and I feel that I am not alone. The latest shuffle between the two men is a set of ads each referring to the other as “the most famous” and going on to ...

    Hi Leah,

I liked your commentary regarding the upcoming election.  I majored in both history and geography and have always been interested in statistics.  I would have to agree that age is not nearly as big of a concern as some analysts have suggested.  John McCain's health appears to be great.  I think if anything he should try to offset this issue by possibly considering a younger vice presidential candidate.  Dick Cheney's health has always been a concern for many - he is now 67 and 5 years older than Bush - not much younger than McCain.  I hope the election boils down to the bread and butter issues of national security, families, education, the environment, providing affordable energy, our senior citizens, immigration reform and addressing our skyrocketing budget so that is does not burden future generations to come.  This is certainly a complex task that will take more than 4 years to answer.  I hope the next candidate will want to invest more money into finding cures for diseases such as cancer, alzheimers and autism.  Who would have thought 60 years ago that there would be a vaccine to prevent polio.  I had a horrible case of chicken pox as a kid and now there's even a vaccine for it!  What I wouldn't have given for that at the time Smile  Medical research is the key to people living healthier, more productive lives.  I should find out more about McCains stance regarding things such as stem cell research and spending for disease prevention.  Some of these issues I would hope are not considered partisan.

The next president may be making some major changes to our supreme court.  Age there is a major issue.  There, the average age of a typical justice is 68.  John Paul Stevens for example is 88 and 5 of the 9 justices are over 70 including the only two active democratically appointed judges.  So many of the major changes of our society have been the results of their decisions.  Plessey v Ferguson, Brown v Board of Education, and Roe v Wade to name a few.  I look forward to listening to the debates and finding out more about where the candidates stand.  Right now I am leaning towards McCain as well although I am a registered Democrat.  Hope you are doing well and are enjoying your summer!

Wow, Bill, you said a mouthful!! I agree with you wholeheartedly.  I will be looking more into the issues.  Stem cell research and other health related issues are very important.  Also, we need to measure what each man stands for where the elderly and our Social Security issues are concerned.  I, too, agree, that it is important for Senator McCain to choose a younger, but very wise, person for his vice president.  I figure we don't have to tell him that, though...  I look forward to both the Conventions and hope to be able to assimilate all that is brought forth...  And, I hope that the candidates remember that what they WANT is not necessarily going to happen, so I want to see alternate ideas, too.  Flexibility and creativity are really important.  As for the Supreme Court, I haven't gotten too involved with that. Feel free to let me know when I may not be looking deeply enough as the election evolves.  Thanks for your note!  God bless you and keep on keepin' on!  Leah  Wink
